Democrats are preparing for Travis County's largest senatorial district convention ever, and the turnout is expected to be 10 times larger than average.
Party officials told CBS 42's Keith Elkins they would normally have about 1,300 participants, but this year they're anticipating a turnout of 10-13,000 people. And while some are predicting managed chaos, they say we should also know exactly which Democratic candidate really won Texas after it's all over. It's been the home for Ice Bat hockey fans and rodeo bull riders. But now Travis County's Expo Center is being transformed into a political battleground for presidential delegates. "The Travis County Convention will be larger than the state Democratic convention this year," said Travis County Constable and Barack Obama delegate Bruce Elfant. Delegate pledge cards are assembled, candidate supporters' turf is already staked out, and more than 7,000 resolutions are being readied for debate. The resolutions cover everything from abolishing the death penalty to banning super-delegates at the party's national convention. But the biggest prize up for grabs is just how many caucus delegates will be awarded to Senator Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. "I think Sunday morning the dust will have settled," Elfant says, "And the numbers coming out of the different senate districts will be hard and fast numbers. I don't expect them to change very much from the county to the state to the national. So, by Sunday we should know how many delegates go to Mr. Obama, and how many delegates go to (Hillary Clinton). I think by Sunday we will finally know who won Texas." Look for web extra coverage from the convention Saturday starting at noon.
