Default Stargate Continuum (2008) review

I have to say that Stargate is my all time favorite TV series, and none of the other ones I’ve watched so far lives up to it. Needless to say I was eagerly waiting for Stargate Continuum to be launched, and it was worth the wait.
Stargate Continuum is the second of two planned movies which were intended to represent the triumphant end of the Stargate SG-1 series. The first movie, “The Ark of Truth” didn’t impress me that much, because there was little action, and overall it seemed like it was made up of two episodes put together. On the other hand, Stargate Continuum has managed to impress me, because it managed to bring back that feeling from the first seasons, the suspense, the action, the funny dialog and that need to say “Oh my God I love this movie”.
So, let’s take the movie piece by piece. The plot manages to resurrect the real spirit of Stargate. The movie begins with a presentation of all the team members, Mitchell (Ben Browder), Teal’c (Cristopher Judge), Carter (Amanda Tapping), Jackson (Michael Shanks), and Vala (Claudia Black), who are planning to go off-world in order to assist to Ba’al’s execution. General Jack O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) is also present at the event. Things go wrong when Vala and Teal’c disappear, and the team discovers that Ba’al has managed to travel back in time and change the course of history. Quite shockingly, O’Neill dies in the first minutes of the movie, but we’re talking about time travel here so don’t worry. The remainder of the team manages to get through the Stargate and ends up in 1939, in an alternate universe, where they have to try and save their own world.
Now for the pro’s and con’s of the movie. The pro’s: well, Continuum managed to bring back the spirit of Stargate perfectly. I have to admit that Richard Dean Anderson was a sight for sore eyes, because I absolutely enjoy his humor and his acting. The movie blended lots of action scenes with funny moments, as well as putting accent on the dramatic side in certain parts. As usual, the special effects didn’t disappoint, and the camera work was great. Overall, the movies was quite well paced, and it was great to see the whole team back together, even if this movie marks the end of the SG-1 series.
The con’s: well, not much to say here actually. There were certain sequences that had a lower pace, but despite this I didn’t get bored. The fact that the time travel theme was used again could seem like a minus, but the movie pulled it off quite well once again, and managed not to make me say “yeah, time travel again”.
Overall, I think this movie is a must see for all Stargate fans, and I definetly think that you won’t be disappointed.

My rating: 9.5/10
