Default Wanted (2008) review

For this movie, I really don’t know where to start. I’ve just seen it and I have to admit that I’m simply dazzled. Wanted is the kind of movie that simply blows your mind away, and, if you ask me, it’s going to be one of this summer’s blockbusters. So, let’s take this movie piece by piece.

The plot is intricate, and the characters develop throughout the movie. Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) is an accounts manager who works all day long in a cubical, has no self respect, whose girlfriend cheats on him, in other words, a man who doesn’t have a life. One day, Fox (Angelina Jolie) changes his life, telling him that his father was an assassin who was murdered, and that now he has to avenge his father. Wesley is trained and becomes a professional assassin, but he later finds out that he was actually tricked into killing his own father. The man behind this is the Fraternity’s leader, Sloan (Morgan Freeman). Finally, Wesley will take his revenge on Sloan.

Now, let’s analyze the pro’s and con’s. The pro’s: the action is absolutely great and keeps you glued to your seat, and your heart races to see the next scene. The special effects are absolutely awesome, and the stunts which are pulled are absolutely mind blowing. James McAvoy’s performance is absolutely great, he evolves from an ordinary man to a professional assassin right under the viewer’s eyes. The storyline is intriguing and I have to say that I didn’t get the chance to get bored, which happens with lots of the movies which are made nowadays.

The con’s: well, uhm…. this is kind of difficult. I can say that the characters of Sloan (Morgan Freeman) and Fox (Angelina Jolie) were a bit underdeveloped, but that’s understandable because otherwise the movie would have lasted too long. Concerning the special effects, I have to admit that certain things to be way out there and impossible, but to my mind they just give spice to the movie and make it amazing.

To conclude, if you like action movies, with special effects, great fighting scenes and lots of adrenaline, then Wanted is the movie for you. As far as I’m concerned, this movie just made my day.

My rating: 10/10

I'm very, very on the fence about this movie. On one hand, it looks awesome and stylish and like a fun action flick. On the other hand it looks like it's trying too hard to be cool/original and it looks to be failing in the been there done that department. I dunno. I'm very open to it but very skeptical. Not to mention how horrible Morgan Freeman saying "There are very few people in the world with this power" .. uhh, to bend bullets? Oh... ok.

Alright, WANTED has got to be the single comic book property LEAST suited to adaptation in other media, the primary reason for that being that it's most frequently read as a satire on the state of modern comics, a message that wouldn't particularly matter to movie audiences and would almost certainly be destroyed in the translation anyway. I suppose clever filmmakers could instead turn it into a satire of modern film, but that would be more trouble than its worth and it doesn't appear to have happened anyway. Beyond that, even at an R rating there's no way that the level of nihilistic violence from the comics (which I would rate somewhere upwards of SILENCE OF THE LAMBS but just a notch below A CLOCKWORK ORANGE) would ever make it into a Hollywood action film.

Bottom line, no studio is going to put their names on a movie where the last line is "This is my face while I fuck you in the ass".

Now, as for the merits of the movie on their own grounds? Well, haven't seen it, but it doesn't look terribly promising. Maybe a good "brainless" action picture, but we dont' really need more of those. But hey, I'll give it its day in court, you never know.

I went to the midnight showing, and really enjoyed it! Granted, i read the comic and knew it was gonna be vastly different, but i was surprised they kept with the comic's tone a bit too. It did get a little hokey near the end of it, with some silly twists, and i was a little confused on how a certain thing worked, but those annoyances were swept away by some good old action (and some pretty funny moments as well).

Finally, next to Iron Man, a fun summer flick!

8/10

I loved the hell out of this thing. True badass fun from start to finish. Amazing action sequences, a great dark style and tone, some really funny comedy, and perfect performances from the cast. It did get a bit muddled towards the end, but it redeemed itself with an awesome ending. McAvoy is going to be a huge star.

I also really liked the mythology of the Fraternity and the explanations as to why they do what they do and how their targets are chosen. Interesting stuff, and makes the film feel like more than just another action film.

It reminds me a bit of Fight Club at times, but it does it well, so I can't really blame it. It's a very different movie from Fight Club anyways, and not nearly as anarchistic. It just has similar themes regarding the emasculation of the modern man as well as certain fighting sequences during the training part of the film.

So yeah, definitely one of the most enjoyable and most technically polished and proficient films of the year, with good acting and a pretty witty and well structured script to boot.

8/10

Someone actually read what i wrote and responded, in other places where i have posted, i got sworn at because I also posted a link to my blog, but I don't think it's spam, because i didn't put 500 links in the beginning, I just mentioned the source, because someone might want to read other articles.
Ayway, thanks for the appreciation and I look forward to being an active part of this community

Wanted had its share of moments that really grabbed me, making me say, "Wow, that was pretty awesome." On the other hand, it also had some moments where I just felt like saying, "Wow, that was pretty dumb." The movie definitely trumps style over substance, but that's not necessarily an insult upon the movie. Wanted rocks in the style department. When you start to analyze things more indepth, however, is when it all starts to fall apart. Avoid looking too closely at this movie, and you will thoroughly enjoy yourself, or at least I did.

i couldn't decide on this movie, wether or not i wanted to see it. i mean, it looks cool but it also looks like it has the potential to be very cheesy.
