FORMER Cuban president Fidel Castro said American society was marked by “profound racism” and that it was a “pure miracle” that US presidential hopeful Barack Obama had not been assassinated.

“Profound racism exists in the US, ” Castro wrote in a commentary that appeared on the website Cubadebate on Saturday, weighing in on the US presidential race.

Castro mocked Republican candidate John McCain’s poor grades at naval academy and said his vice-presidential nominee, Sarah Palin, “knew nothing about anything”.
